Contracts
Contracts are often essential in the business world and for programs of student organizations. When your organization has received a contract, it is important that you have it signed by an appropriate staff member in our office or by a staff member in one of the offices mentioned below.
It's also important to note: No student, graduate or undergraduate, has the authority to legally bind Emory University contractually. This includes student organizations & departments. Authorized personnel can be found in our office, the Office of Multicultural Programs & Services, Office of Sorority & Fraternity Life, and the Department of Residence Life & Housing. Faculty & staff advisors are also not permitted to sign contracts unless they have been given written permission from the General Counsel's Office. If you should sign a contract on your own, it makes you personally liable, for the contract, not your organization, or Emory University.
A contract is a legally binding agreement between 2 or more parties in which a service is exchanged for compensation of some kind. Contracts enable responsibilities and entitlements to be very clear. Everyone knows their responsibilities, the venue info, time, place, fees, etc. Contracts also protect both parties and they provide remedies when problems arise.
Your organization's contract should be submitted to our office 4 weeks prior to your event. This gives our office 2-3 weeks to review the contract and 1-2 weeks for you to ensure that the company you employ gets paid on time. Please do not ask us to rush contracts- we do not!
When you submit a contract to our office, please fill out a contract cover sheet as well. If you do not bring one with you, one will be provided for you to complete. If the company or artist you want to work with does not have a contract, feel free to use the Emory University contract designed specifically for student organizations.
